THIS WEEK IN LINN WARD

This week has started with the disappointing news that Hasties Bakery at Croftfoot Roundabout is to close at the end of March. This means that shoppers from Carmunnock,Croftfoot, Simshill and Kingspark will have to travel to Mount Florida to find a fresh bakers. The staff at Hasties have worked there for many years and have known generations of families so they are particularly sad at the prospect of the closure. However 160 customers signed a petition asking Greggs to take over and to keep the current staff. In my discussions with Greggs Headquarters I learned that there is a reasonable chance thast there will still be a bakers’ shop at the roundabout….and with the same staff….fingers crossed!

Another major issue is the flooding in the area. It is acknowledged that, in the last decade, rainfall has increased by 60% but since the removal of a large number of trees in Kings Park there has been serious flooding in the gardens in Overwood Dr, Southwood Dr, Menock Road and Glencroft Road….all the houses adjacent to the park are aaffected and large amounts of water pour out of the park entrances when it rains. The Director of Land Services came out with me and was shocked at the conditions within the park and the effect on homes neighbouring the park. Clearly there is a huge remedial job to be done.

A new Community Council has been formed in Croftfoot meeting at 7.30pm on the second Monday of the month in Kings Park Baptist Church in Castlemilk Road. The main difficulty in Croftfoot is the lack of a community venue. With this in mind the Community Council are preparing a business plan to bring the cycling hut in Glencroft Road back into use as such a resource. However to make full use of this building and encourage activities there volunteers are urgently needed to help even for a few hours a week. If you are interested please contact me.
