Brown calls for much more effective action on child trafficking

Commenting on a report into child trafficking which has found that Scotland is failing child victims of people trafficking, Liberal Democrat Justice spokesperson and a long time campaigner for stronger outcomes on trafficking, Robert Brown MSP said:

“Whilst it is welcome that the first prosecutions on sex trafficking in Scotland have taken place, the Children’s Commissioner report reveals that there are a considerable number of unreported and unprosecuted crimes in this area involving children.

“I am concerned that as many as 80 children may have been trafficked into Scotland without anyone having been convicted. It is, admittedly, a difficult area on which to get evidence but there is a pressing need for much more effective action to secure prosecution and conviction of traffickers.

“Action is needed from a range of different agencies to start tackling this serious and growing problem. We must send out a clear message that Scotland will not tolerate those who perpetrate this horrible crime.”
