Councillor Christopher Mason has been serving Glasgow at the City Council for over 25 years.

Christopher Mason, the veteran Glasgow Liberal Democrat believed to be the longest-serving political leader in the UK, has stood down after almost a quarter of a century.

Having long been considered the voice of opposition and robust scrutiny Christopher has served at both the Strathclyde Regional council and the Glasgow City Council. His ward has in this time changed on several occasions and today Christopher's ward is Partick West.

Christopher started his involvement in politics during the 60's and became leader of the Cambridge University Liberal Club.

Joining the Liberal party in Glasgow in 1981 Christopher became one of four Liberal representatives at the Strathclyde Regional Council in 1982. In 1986 Christopher became leader of the Liberal Group and was involved in helping form the Liberal Democrats.

Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Tavish Scott MSP said: “Christopher has served the people of Glasgow tirelessly for many years and has always provided me with insightful, sharp and telling political analysis.

“He’s been an outstanding leader of Liberalism in Glasgow and I look forward to many more healthy and vigorous discussions with him in the coming years.”
