Glasgow Pollok
Isabel Nelson is a local candidate who lives in the heart of Glasgow Pollok.
Her son and daughter with their families also live in the constituency and her grandchildren all go to local schools.
Isabel first stood as a candidate in 1982 for Strathclyde Regional Council, then for Glasgow Central at the General Election of 1983. More recently she stood for Pollok (both Scottish and Westminster), Cardonald (Glasgow City Council), Glasgow Central at the 2005 General Election and Glasgow South West at the 2010 General Election.
As a child Isabel grew up and went to school in Glasgow but then continued her education as a mature student gaining several highers at Langside College and then an Honours degree in Economics and Politics at Glasgow University.
She then worked at Strathclyde University on a project researching the causes and effects of dampness in council housing. Next she was a founder member of Heatwise Glasgow eventually becoming General Manager of what was by then the largest energy conservation and training company in the UK.
Since leaving Heatwise she has been busy working on a part-time basis as an IT Consultant helping to design specialised business software for energy and training companies.
Isabel was Vice Chair of the Glasgow anti-dampness committee, a member of Energy Action Scotland’s Management committee and Chair of the Right to Warmth Campaign. Isabel has given evidence to Glasgow City Council and to two House of Commons Select Committees investigating the extent of fuel poverty in the U.K
Isabel and her colleagues successfully negotiated with the DSS in Glasgow for single payment grants to be made available for draught-proofing and graduated to collaborating in a very successful campaign for government funded provision of grants for home energy conservation measures.
Among other things she has campaigned on ‘Save Our School Buses’ in Toryglen and petitioned for ‘Axe the Tax’ and ‘Save Our Post Offices’ in Cardonald, Battlefield and Shawlands.
