Rainfall causes havoc in Kings Park

Written by Administrator. Posted in Margot Clark

In her latest blog, Linn ward councillor Margot Clark discusses the damage caused by rainfall and flooding from Kings Park, an action plan for Netherholm and the newly formed Croftfoot Community Council.

These last two weeks have been very busy and there is a sense that everyone is back at work after the festive period.

The ongoing problem of the flooding coming from Kings Park continues to cause considerable stress to the families living alongside the park.

In the last decade the rainfall in Scotland has increased by 60% so this increases the necessity to maintain drains on a regular basis.

Constituents living in these properties are demanding to meet with officials to find out how they plan to resolve this issue. There are many distressing stories like the lady who had to buy a pair of wellingtons to steer her husband’s wheelchair through the flooded driveway to get to their car.

Another gentleman who is on oxygen had water ingress in his basement and lost electricity. These are a few examples of the condition of homes and people affected by the water from the park.

However on the positive side the newly established Netherholm Working Group met this week and what a committed and enthusiastic group of people they are.

Until now there was no place to get together but now Thenew Housing Association has generously gifted their comfortable flat for our meetings which has given a tremendous boost to our plans.

Other good news is the establishment of Croftfoot Community Council who are committed to the community.

One project being considered is to transform the field in Croftburn road into allotments. This area has been used so far for anti-social activities so that allowing it to be developed and looked after by gardeners will be welcomed by those people who live adjacent to it.

The Community Council meets on the second Monday of the month and residents are encouraged to come along and support their work. One of their first projects will be a programme of tea dances so Strictly Come Dancing may have some new entrants next year! Contact me for details.

Glenmarnock Wheelers back in action

Written by Baillie Margot Clark. Posted in Margot Clark

In our last FOCUS leaflet we broke the news that vandals had caused damage to the accommodation used by Glenmarnock Wheelers Cycling Club in King’s Park.
Extensive damage was caused but Glasgow City Council have now refurbished the building which is to be used as a community facility.
Councillor Margot Clark said: “I am delighted that Glenmarnnock Wheelers will be back in King’s Park. The group are an excellent local group who have encouraged many local people to take up cycling (including myself!) Some young talents have been identified and we are hoping that some will be entered into the Commonwealth Games.”

Secondary School zoning

Written by Baillie Margot Clark. Posted in Margot Clark

The contentious issue of secondary school zoning for pupils attending Carmunnock Primary is to be consulted on by the Council in the Autumn.
At present children are zoned for Castlemilk High School but not one child has gone to Castlemilk High in recent years. This is having an effect on the population of the village and parents would like this issue resolved once and for all.
The position of Carmunnock is anomalous, as a village within Glasgow, bordering both East Renfrewshire and South Lanarkshire.
Local Liberal Democrat Councillor Margot Clark said: “The consultation is planned to assess the views of local parents. I would urge everyone to take part.
Hopefully a satisfactory solution can be found. It would, however, be quite wrong if too rigid a view of local Council boundaries was taken.”

Call for better disabled facilities at Castlemilk Swimming Pool

Written by Baillie Margot Clark. Posted in Margot Clark

Bailie Margot Clark has been heavily involved in a campaign to secure better facilities for disabled people at Castlemilk Swimming Pool.

Margot said: “Castlemilk Swimming Pool is a great local resource and it’s a shame that the pool isn’t accessible to the whole community. When the pool was refurbished a number of significant improvements were made, which do benefit a number of disabled people but we urgently need a changing plinth to allow disabled swimmers to get changed. The pool has a disabled changing room and changing bench but this is not adequate to allow some disabled people to get changed safely.”

“We need to raise around £12,000 for the alterations and I am positive that we can achieve this. The staff at Castlemilk Swimming Pool are very supportive of our aim as are Enable Scotland who identified the problem and are leading the campaign.”

Manse Brae Housing Development

Written by Baillie Margot Clark. Posted in Margot Clark

Local residents are up in arms about the ongoing saga of the proposed housing development between Manse Brae and Old Castle Road. The most recent planning application for 46 flats was rejected by the Council's Planning Committee following 133 objections (including all the local councillors). However the developer, Southside Housing Association, have appealed the refusal to Scottish Ministers.

Local Linn Councillor Margot Clark said: "Many local people have complained about the proposed development where traffic is already heavily congested. The development is not in character with the surrounding are and is substantial over-development."

Glasgow Liberal Democrat MSP Robert Brown was also one of the objectors.

Robert Brown MSP said: "This is a highly unsuitable development for the area. You just need to see the level of existing traffic congestion on Friday afternoons for example to see the problem if this number of extra flats were approved."
