Help keep out-of-hours GP services more local

Local people in Rutherglen and Cambuslang have been outraged by the news that Lanarkshire Health Board are planning to move the GP Out of Hours service from the New Victoria Infirmary to either one centre in Hamilton, or two centres in Hamilton and Airdrie. This is a bureaucracy-driven change following Rutherglen and Cambuslang being moved from NHS Greater Glasgow to NHS Lanarkshire.

Robert Brown and local Liberal Democrats were the first to raise the alarm over the proposals and are campaigning to stop the change.

Robert said:

“This is a vital issue which affects everyone. The plans are shambolic, confusing and badly thought out. This silly move should be halted now.

NHS Lanarkshire want to end the longstanding arrangement under which people in Rutherglen and Cambuslang go to the Victoria if they need a GP out of normal hours.

It is extraordinary that the Health Board, backed by the SNP government, think that adding 60,000 patients from Rutherglen and Cambuslang to a Lanarkshire service which already deals with 320,000 people would actually help.

The test of change should be whether it is good for Rutherglen and Cambuslang. The current Health Board proposals fail that test badly.”

We, the undersigned, call on the SNP government and Lanarkshire Health Board to halt the consultation on the proposed move of GP Out of Hours services from the Victoria Infirmary to Hamilton and Airdrie, and to provide NHS services which suit people in Rutherglen and Cambuslang.
