Commenting on the Scottish Government’s student funding package announced today, Scottish Liberal Democrat Education spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP said:
“I’m pleased that the Scottish Government has set an annual minimum income for those from the poorest backgrounds. I also welcome that they have recognised the real struggle of part-time students who often study part-time because they can’t afford not to work. This was a sensible decision and one which has long been called for by students.
“However, for Mr Russell to assert that somehow this means that all is well with the clearing system in Scottish Universities is a remarkable leap of faith. He seems unwilling to listen to concerns that have been raised by parents and pupils in schools across Scotland who are struggling to identify opportunities under current system.
“It is time Mr Russell takes these concerns seriously rather than simply shout down any and everyone who has the brass neck to suggest that fairer arrangements might be possible for Scottish-based students.”
