Urgent action needed over childhood obesity
Commenting as official figures released today show that a fifth of Primary 1 children are overweight and 5.5% are now severely obese, Liberal Democrat Health spokesperson Alison McInnes MSP said:
“It is deplorable that so many very young children are considered to be severely obese by the age of 5.
“Many school children still do not receive the promised 2 hours of PE a week pledged to them by SNP in 2007.
“If SNP doesn’t move fast to combat childhood obesity, there is a real risk that all of the very good work tackling the “big three” health problems will be undermined.
“The Scottish Liberal Democrats continue to advocate healthy living though increased exercise and better eating, and we call upon the SNP government to take sincere actions to reduce these deplorable statistics in childhood obesity.”
