SNP cuts to Council Budget “outrageous” – Robert Brown

The SNP government cuts to South Lanarkshire Council’s Budget have been described as “outrageous” by Rutherglen Liberal Democrat Councillor Robert Brown (who is also the Liberal Democrat Scottish Parliament candidate for Rutherglen and lead list candidate for Glasgow). An estimated £21 million of extra cuts to the Council’s budget would have a devastating effect. The cuts were also the result of a deliberate choice made by the SNP to hammer local government.

Robert Brown went on:

“These are hard financial times but no one imagined that the SNP government would deliberately make things even worse by slashing funding for key local services like schools, roads, libraries and cleansing. The share of the Scottish Budget going to Local Government services has gone down as a proportion while money has been spent on other things.

To add insult to injury, the SNP government cut has come immediately after it was announced that they had been unable to spend their full allocation in each of the last two years. In fact, they underspent by over a third of a billion pounds each year.

The SNP Government are directly responsible for severe cuts in education and early years’ services, other council services across the board, jobs and employment prospects across South Lanarkshire. It is an absolute and outrageous disgrace.

As always, the SNP are claiming it is all due to Westminster – it is time for them to take responsibility for their own, poor political choices.

More importantly, they should listen to people across the country and reverse these iniquitous cuts.”
