Glasgow City councils debt has soared to £1.6 billion in 2023/2024 highlighting the strain of local government finances under the SNP Scottish Government.

Scottish Liberal Democrats in recent budget negotiations made getting more funding for local services a priority, focusing on turning a corner on continued cuts to services in cities, towns and villages across the whole of Scotland.

Susan Murray, Liberal Democrat MP for Mid Dunbartonshire said:

“A lot of Glasgow residents will wonder where on earth this money is going when, under this SNP-Green run council, the city suffers from crumbling pavements, empty high streets and unreliable transport links.

“The SNP have always put communities and councils at the very bottom of the agenda. That’s why Scottish Liberal Democrats made local services a priority in recent budget negotiations, so that we can help councils, including Glasgow, turn a corner and rebuild.

“We need to end an era of school strikes, bin strikes and a shortage of care packages. That begins with a proper, long-term funding settlement for local authorities and ensuring key issues like education, housing and care get the investment they deserve.”
